Straub’s search for colored eggs

It’s turning into a beautiful spring day today 60F and sunny. The chicks found a nice sunny spot to hang out. Smoky is still sitting still on her nest like she is expecting more to hatch. I took her golf balls away when I delivered the chicks last night. The rest of the flock are outside of the grow out pin trying to figure out what’s going on.

I’ll probably wait a week or so before I open the door and let Smoky introduce the chicks. For now she doesn’t appear to want to leave the nest so I’ll let them have some privacy. IMG_5998.jpeg IMG_5997.png

I candled the remaining eggs and didn’t see any signs of life so I did the eggtopsy on each egg. Final results of the complete incubation.
18 eggs set

6 healthy chicks hatched within the expected time

1 late quitter fully developed but really small maybe day 17-18 if I had to guess

11 never started they were either never fertilized or got too cold before I collected them.

You have 6 beautiful little fluff butts and a momma taking over care of them...

100% success, my friend.

Agreed, I can’t fault this $15 used incubator it hatched 85% of the ones that started to develop. This issue is the <40% fertility rate. None of my eggs from Blue or Wednesday had any sign of development. They are my dark green layers I was hoping for a couple chicks from them. I’ll scrub down the incubator tomorrow morning and reset In the evening

You mentioned having a hard time candling the darks, check out this diy. I'm planning to build one to try out.

Another hatch?

Yea I have a few friends and family members that want some chicks. I’ll probably fill this incubator to maximum capacity. It will be way more chicks than I need but I don’t think I’ll have any trouble selling off any extras.
How many will it hold?
That's great. I'm on schedule to set this weekend also.
Dueling hatches again, buddy !!
