Straub’s search for colored eggs

Storm did go up to the high roost to sleep tonight so she hasn’t totally committed to hatching eggs yet. Since I have new layers that are dropping eggs wherever they happen to be at the time the urge hits I have been moving their eggs to the nest boxes and letting them pile up through the day.

I was hoping seeing a pile of eggs would encourage the pullets to use the boxes. But it looks like the pile of eggs might have tempted Storm into trying to sit on them. Maybe if I stay on top of collecting I can get her to find other things to do with her time.
Yep, did the same thing. I was marking eggs but leaving them in the nest boxes to show the pullets not thinking that Raven, Angel and Black would be all...

"I just hatched eggs, but looky here...I found more eggs to sit on" 😕

I was out doing chicken chores and noticed that Smoky may be coming down with a case of fowl pox. I don’t see it on any of the others yet. I haven’t noticed any mosquito issues but some of those spots on her comb just don’t look like peck marks to me. I guess I’ll keep an eye on everyone and see how things go

Then when I went to get check on eggs Storm(OE) let out a growl and pecked my hand away. So I picked her up and sure enough she has a broody patch on her belly. This is her first time going broody so I guess I’ll see where she chooses to sleep tonight and proceed from there. I had noticed a lot of black feathers and pine shavings lining one of the nest boxes. So I was getting suspicious about a possible broody.

If those spots become blisters than Fowl Pox is a good possibility. This virus usually doesn't kill a healthy bird but i can make them off and tired for a couple of weeks. A good supplement like Poultry Cell helps their immune system fight the virus and heals them quicker.

The camera doesn’t show it as well as I can see in person but a few of the spots do look like blisters. I had a real had time getting a decent picture because she kept trying to eat the camera. Any time I get close to any of the girls they either assume I’m trying to kill them and the freak out. Or they think I’m giving them something to eat and they freak out in a different way. It’s always drama.

I need to go pick up more feed so I’ll take a look at their supplements.

Thank you

Sounds like she still has spunk! 🤣 Just keep an eye in them, it never hurts to give supplements on occasion anyway.

Yep, I keep going back and forth on whether I should build more housing and run separate age appropriate flocks. When everyone is together you have to think about everyone anytime you make any little change. But going into winter I don’t want to have to take care of separate flocks so I’m just doing the best I can to meet everyone’s needs

Egg production is slowing down and most of the adults are starting to drop feathers. I don’t think anyone has completely stopped laying yet but most are only giving a couple a week. I still have one of the Easter chicks now 23 weeks old that I haven’t seen lay yet and 3 slightly younger girls 19 weeks old I’m expecting to lay sometime soon

So far today I have 7 eggs. Gena is back to laying double yolkers after her last broody session. Lacy did come back into lay and is giving torpedo shaped eggs. She has always laid somewhat long and skinny but they are extra skinny this week. Blue never disappoints with her olive eggs. They are a bit lighter and smaller than they were in the spring but still very nicely colored.

Then I have 3 small brown ones I known that the first two are Morticia and Smokey but I don’t know where the 3 one came from. Maybe the last Easter chick Wednesday or one of the 3 19 week old girls.

Just beautiful! ❤️

New layer incoming. My 20 week old unknown breed pullet Maple has been hanging out in the nest boxes and singing the song of her people. I have been pacing around outside the coop waiting to see what color she lays. She was marked as a buff Orpington but clearly isn’t an Orpington. My best guess is starlight green egger or some similar creatively named version of an Easter egger
