Ahhhh... She's still stunning.
Joannie hasn't laid in a week. I think she's doing a soft molt here so it's not as noticable.
Noooo....I don't. 10 broodys was enough this year. What I need is more eggs from her to do a Bator hatch from her eggs.I can clearly see pin feathers in both of my Easter Eggers and I see a lot of lose feathers laying everywhere so I’m watching for molt soon. Sounds like Joannie could be starting or gearing up to go broody. You need another broody
They could almost pass as twins.. Smoky looks to be a tad darker blue with a dark tail. Her hackles might be a shade darker also...I just went out to check for eggs and smoky ran right up to me for attention so I picked her up and carried her up to the house to get a couple close up pictures for comparison to her mom Blue
Blue is about 6 months old in her picture taken this past December Smoky is around 5 months old currently
Smoky today

One of these days we’ll have to meet up for a swap. I don’t think I can mail them across state lines without some sort of certification. I haven’t looked into if it’s all state lines or only certain states but I know I read something about the government needs to be involved. They could almost pass as twins.. She's just as pretty.I've said it before, I need eggs from these 2

NPIP certification to ship out of state. I haven't looked into it too hard yet. Once I get some good eggs from the BBS Silvers in the nest boxes and confident in my BCMs is when I'll be chomping at the bit. Of course I'll have a few more boys to test mate all over...NPIP certification to ship out of state. I haven't looked into it too hard yet. Once I get some good eggs from the BBS Silvers in the nest boxes and confident in my BCMs is when I'll be chomping at the bit. Hopefully by fall '25.
It was hard with 10 broodys this year but it sped up my test matings. I really only have Jett and Copper to test mate yet out of the 9 hens, but Copper has good hackle coloring so I believe mating her to Kong is going to go way overboard with coloring.
After reading about other members flocks and sharing some details of my own flock across several different threads I have decided to open my own thread detailing my flock. I run a mixed flock of egg layers. My chickens fall somewhere between pets and livestock I spoil them when I can but I don’t raise house or lap chickens
The flock currently consists of my rooster Axl he is a pet quality Black Copper Marans. He has 15 hens and 6 up and coming pullets that are just starting to lay. Breeds include BCM, Wyandotte, JG, OE, EE, BR, light Brahma, buff Orpington, cinnamon queen, and one unknown breed that I bought as a buff Orpington but clearly is not an Orpington.
I do some breeding. My main goals with breeding are getting more colorful eggs and meat for the freezer. I have only been at this for an about a year and a half so I still have a long way to go but I’m getting there. I’ll try to update this thread as things progress.
Anyone who would like to follow along is welcome. Most of my chickens are not in top camera ready condition some of the girls do have significant patches on their backs from breeding and I believe we’re at the beginning of molting season but that all part of chicken raising so I’m sure people will understand.
