I posted this in the Rambling section but I think it should be here ?
Do you think it will discolor the fence over time ?

I ask because I was going to use the old Straw bales I have in between the rubbermaid shed coop and the new white vinyl fence. I need to help insulate the coop for Winter and it would be great to do it on at least 2 sides.
There would be just enough room to put these between. PLUS when it snows I won't have to worry about pressure against the coop. Nor have to shovel it out ;)

Ehh...it might. it wouldn't be because of the straw, per se, but because it might hold moisture there and algae/molds could grow there. Not sure if plastic between would help or make it worse, as least the moisture could drain away thru the straw.
It may also provide a nice shelter for mice.

hmm all very good points.
I have had these bales for 2 years and used it to insulate the stock tank when I had fish in there over the winter. One was also opened and shoved under the 1 foot deep, 1 foot high over hang from house to ground to stop cats from coming into yard. I never saw a mouse or had any indication there was one. The chipmunk liked it but he is now dead.

Good part is that Spiders and bugs love the bales and the chickens love to eat them :)

The baling wire could rust and stain the fence. I'm also planning on using straw bales as a wind stop for in the winter, didn't think about mice. Might have to set them a little ways from the coop on the west and north side.

Ah....just go for it, tigger!
Bales usually bound with twine made of jute or plastic.....
.....don't think they use wire anymore, do they?

I think they stopped using wire around here. It rusts and if horse/cattle eats it there is a big issue, not as much with twine. Plus every farm/horse stable I know re-uses the twine ;)

I can always set up the electric trap for the mice.. muahahahahhaa

Here they often use wire for small bales here at least for straw. I have some straw in my yard with wire. I think it may depend on the equipment. Around here big round hay (not straw) bales are usually used for cattle and horses so have twine.

I'm not really sure what a vinyl fence is like, it isn't a material we use here (as far as I know), but can you use car polish on it? If you wax it, any discolouration from the straw shouldn't get to the fencing material.

@potato chip GREAT IDEA !! I wonder if Marine wax would be even better.
It is Vinyl, like thick plastic. As you can tell I have a lot of work to do ;) Coop will go in that far corner
