Straw Bales hard to find!

We are around the Charleston Area in SC. We are having the hardest time finding straw for the duck house. Everything is pine straw around here for sale. I know we can use pine shavings, but we just don't like them. They don't break down as fast. Does anyone know where to get straw? Online maybe? Has anyone used hemp bedding like for chickens? Is that safe for ducks? TIA!

yes hemp bedding would be fine or hay or pine straw. Only bedding I know to stay away from is cedar.

I went to the local produce stand and they were able to find me hay and straw, and start ordering it regularly. I now get a bale from them every other week!

Contact farmers that produce hay and straw.
Can't buy it at a store.

Yes, I also get it from the farmers who cut their own hay. You should have places in your area that do that. Buy a big round bale ($50 usually) and it will last a long long time if you've got a place to put it out of the weather. It should fit in the back of a pickup truck.

Are there any horse people in the area? Ask them or look for a saddlery in the area and see what they recommend.

Meanwhile, I don't know anything about pine straw but pine shavings should hold up well and then break down effectively particularly if it's mixed with duck droppings. Pine cones and pine needles not so much.

TSC has straw bales if have one close by. Landscaping and feed n seed companies typically get them in. All recs given good.

just called our port richey tractor supply -- and my local feed store sells it cheaper! So do some research at the places everyone mentions above, you may have options!
