Straw or hay?

i got some free straw and they said it would be fine for bedding for chicks which is better pine or straw? i'd rather use hay or maybe switch on and off. is straw ok?

Yes, it's okay. I use straw as bedding for broody hens with chicks. I use straw with a little hay as nesting material for my hens, and I use straw after the first couple of weeks for incubator hatched chicks (they stay on paper towels in the brooder for the first couple of weeks).
