Straw or shavings??

Alright my chicken friends, 23 Buff Orpington pullets, 2 Buff Orpington cockerel, they are all 18 weeks old, I found two eggs in the flowerbed!! Yayyy!! So, should I put straw or shavings in the laying box??

It's really your choice. Or should I say your hens choice. Mine prefer straw or hay for nesting.

I use shavings, but i have one new layer that loves to scratch everything out of the boxes! I just bought nesting pads, and she is starting to destroy those, too! Just sit down alreadY!

I use straw in the nest boxes and shavings in the coop.

Straw can hold moisture depending on where you live I am in western Washington rain capital I use shavings deep littler method

I've used straw, hay, shavings, or a combination of all three, with a base of empty feed bags. The hens like to rearrange everything, and scratch out the bedding. I then add more, and it gets moved out. So more added, and it goes on and on. The bedding lands in the coop, so isn't wasted.
Just use what you have, and they will be fine.

I have used straw, hay, spanish moss and shavings. Now I'm using the shavings. They do scratch them out so I do add more to the nest boxes. If an egg gets broken the other eggs don't get as dirty, the shaving absorb the egg. Good luck and have fun...
