Take your time with talking to them but be honest I've been there I understand how you feel. Maybe explain to them first that mommy can get sad and needs to cry it out so she can work out all her feelings. Sorry I don't know the ages. Then maybe if you have a close friend or family member have them help you explain why he left or that he's gone. Maybe use Gretel as an example, it will just be mommy and babies for awhile. Honestly they will always want a daddy or a daddy figure, i'm still having a hard time with this one with my son. Good Luck.

My twin boys are 4. My daughter is 9. I guess I shouldn't wallow. Kids are resilient. I need to stop crying and get dressed nicely and go hand out resumes. But this job was supposed to save us. And so I'm terrified, to be honest.

But I put him on a plane. He had to fly out. And now I'll never see him again. And that just kills. That last thing I'll remember is watching him walk through the gate. It's horrible.

Hun, only a genuine , good hearted person would go out of their way to help gretel the way you did. I know your heart is aching now, but remember good things come to good people.

Agreed, but it will get better there may some downs but it will get better. Your kids will understand! Get those tears out now.

I've been reading this thread and hearing about Gretel is heartwarming. Thank you very much for sharing her story.
I'm so sad to hear about your latest news. It's alright to cry. You can acknowledge your emotions.
I don't currently have children, so take this with a grain of salt, but I would tell them what happened and tell them that it is okay to be sad, and sad things do happen in life. It is alright to take time to grieve. But life still needs to be lived, and things do get better... just look at Gretel, formerly a stray, and now adopted into your loving family and going to have a little family of her own.
Hugs for you... it is rough. Take your time to grieve and cry. Spend time with your loving children, and with your chickens. Spend time on yourself, doing what you want to do.

The babies are here!!! Hatched this morning. Dad and I clipped Gretel's wing and put them all in an isolation pen. We have 8!! I'll take better pics when they're out and about more. But they're so little and fluffy and cute I could die!! Eeeek!
