Stray chicken. What do I do?, and it’s been SO hot.

If there is a commercial chicken house across the street, it's a Leghorn if it's from a laying house , or a Cornish Cross if it's a meat bird house.
Even though they change out leghorn hens at 18-24 months of age to keep peak laying abilities, those leghorn girls are still good for a lot of HUGE white eggs for many more years.

You can also tell what kind of chickens they have by how often the semi trucks come pick up the birds.
Of the big trucks only come get the birds once every year or two, they are layers. But if the trucks show up every 2-3 months, they are raising Meaties, also know as Cornish Cross.

Definitely not for meat. It’s an egg factory. I guess that would make her a leg horn. I have a dog kennel. Maybe I’ll capture her and put her inside. She also escaped my German Shepherd who was chasing her around. That’s how I found her in my yard. She’s a survivor for sure!

Build her a little enclosure doesn’t have to be fancy. Something for shelter and protection. Repurpose some scrap items. It’s less stressful and easier to catch/get her at night. By the time you feed/water her for a quarantine period she’ll be used to you.
Move her enclosure next to your chickens let them see and hear each other then the transition should go smoother. Make sure she’s got places to get away from bullies.
Who knows just might turn out to be the greatest lil chicken ever.
I happen to love Leghorn’s.
Got one that has etched her name right on my heart.
Smart birds.
Best wishes

Here she is. Oh my.

Oh the poor thing. Looks like they force molted the layer house to shock the hens into final egg production before gassing them. That’s common practice in the egg industry. Just take them off food and water for a week or two and they go into molt, once that happens they give them food again and they will lay real well for a few weeks and then they gas them.
