Stray dog attack... ending in a shoot out!

I think those dogs sounded really scary. It is one thing if a dog attacks a chicken... that is their natural instinct... and the owner should keep them kenneled or in their yard. But if they are growling at you on your own property??? That is SCARY.

And I do not in any way say that it is ok that they killed the chickens. Your poor sweet guineas. I am just saying that those dogs sounded dangerous in general and needed to be taken care of. They could have attacked a child next.'

I lived in a really nice street a few years ago. And there was a neighbor that had a really big mean dog that had attacked multiple people on our street. And the people that owned the dog could not understand why we were all so upset. Someone eventually shot the dog... but the dog lived. They kept saying how SWEET the dog was. Uh. No.

I am so sorry for the loss of your birds.

LovinMyHensInNC! I can RELATE all too well!! My guard guinea is in the house right now, we are hoping she makes it, but it doesn't look good. She was not bitten, but think she can't recover from the shock of OUR neighbors dog attack on Saturday. You did the absolute right thing! Glad too that the law was there!! Wish we would have had time to call them. VERY scarrry isn't it!

good thing you had the guineas - sorry you lost your male - too bad you don't live closer to me - my sister has 4 of them she would like to rehome - they are so noisy - great watchdogs. Your guinea gave his life protecting "his" property.

I think you are so right - the loss could have been much greater.

Those dogs were human aggressive..they needed to be put down. So sorry about your birds!

Don't you dare feel guilty about those dogs. Personally I think the owners should have been shot. It was bad enough about your poor guineas, but the aggressiveness showed to you could have been extremely dangerous. I read all the time about dogs attacking people because they are not yarded or kept inside. Sometimes the people are killed or maimed for life. Some are children. I love all animals, I have dogs myself, but they are controlled even though they love everybody.

So sorry to hear about your birds - seems like there's been a fair number of tragic stories lately involving dogs. It pretty outrageous reading stories about folks here who live in communities that ban chickens while dogs are accepted without question. Seems arse backwards to me.... when was the last time a chicken mauled somebody or made noise all night?

Those sounded like some really bad dogs.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea get something to help deal with future problems like this without having to wait for a officer to show up.
I always keep a .22 or Glock handy for that reason, and doing so has saved the lives of many of my birds.

A bow/crossbow with a Broadhead arrow will work good too.

Thanks for that suggestion. I will definitely add that to the letter I have to write out as part of the police report.

The officer will appreciate that letter. Many of them are bigtime dog and animal lovers (comes with the job apparently) and a note of thanks will go a long way in helping their guilty feelings.

Sorry for your loss and I am happy you and everyone else is okay. Sounds like the right thing was done. Its a sad thing but be happy the dogs didnt get you, hubby or a child your birds were bad enough. I agree its a sad thing when owners do not take proper care of the animals they own and it causes bad things to happen to yours on your land. Again I am glad you and your husband are fine.
