It helps to clip that cats nails, that way if they try to scratch your furniature, they can do any harm, but if the cat goes outside, they wont be able to protect themselves. You can try getting double stick tape and putting it on the furniature that he tries to scratch, that might deter him once the touches it with his feet.

Since I posted the "lion kitty" pics earlier in this thread (page 5) to make fun of the stray Maine Coon cat when he had to get shaved by the vet -- I figured I better post updated pics so you can see how well lion kitty is doing now. You can see how spoiled he has become with his little rug next to my computer so he can be comfortable when I'm online doing BYC stuff:

I have two Maine Coon Cats. They are wonderful but do have very strong minds. I would not have any other type of cat though.

Grooming is very important with my two. They are inside only cats but they still get mats every now and then. I also make sure they get their daily vitamins which keeps there coat and skin healthy.

As for scratching I provide my girls plenty of scratch posts and they love pieces of carpet to claw on, which I get for free at a local carpet supplier.

He is so handsome. We took in a stray maine coon in Dec 1999 and he was is terrible shape. A year later, his skin was still healing from all the flea, tic, and mosquito bites. His teethe were so abcessed they had to pull all but one fang tooth and 3 tiny front pin teeth. I would not let anyone name him because "we cant keep him" so we decided to just call him Cat to help us NOT get attached ...........

yeah RIGHT. So now we are cruising through 2008 and CAT is the king of the house

I find it interesting that he is the only long haired cat in the house, but i think he sheds less than the short haired cats
