Around Easter this spring, we began to hear an unusual bird call...rather mechanical in nature. A few days later, we spotted a Banty rooster under one of our bird feeders. By asking around, I learned that some boys had brought a rooster to a neighbor who did not want it. Apparently, he was just turned loose and established residence in a thicket next to us. We were concerned for his safety. We began adding cracked corn where we had seen him feed. One day, during a downpour, I said, Oh, I wish we could help that little rooster; I went to the front door, and there he sat on the door mat, taking shelter on our front porch. Each time it rained, he came, and I would go out and sit with him and gradually he let me approach. I began feeding him from my hand, but always, he returned to his home in the thicket. Early last week, we missed his morning crowing, and he seemed to be gone. A little later, he walked in off of the road, minus his beautiful tail feathers. He will no longer go near the thicket, so apparently, he was attacked by something there. He became our rooster at that point and we have provided him shelter in a large dog crate--still on the front porch. We keep adding amenities. My sister named him Bobbin (to fit in with my love of sewing machines and collection of toy sewing machines). (Dog is named Serger!)

My family raised chickens for eggs and meat, so I am familiar with poultry, but never as a pet. Bobbin is following me everywhere when he is free. However, Serger thinks Bobbin would fit nicely in his mouth, so we have to juggle things a bit.

Glad to find this site to learn and share!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

What a story! Poor boy. But at least he found you! Be careful it you are keeping him on the porch in this crate if the porch is open to the outside. Critters of the night can reach in and get him or hurt him badly. So you might cover it with hardware cloth till you get him a coop built.

You might also stop by our learning center. Lots of tips and hints on building the coop, raising your boy and keeping him happy, healthy and safe from predators....

You may want to get him a harem of hens at some point so he is not too lonely. :-)

Welcome to BYC! TwoCrows has given you some good advice and a good link to get you started. Good luck on keeping Bobbin out of Serger's mouth (and out of the mouth of any other predator).

First we just set the crate on 2 sawhorses and covered it with a very felted old blanket. I just kept thinking of those hands reaching between the bars, and left the intercom on so I would hear any excitement. Now, he has a wooden box within the crate, and the first night that was in there, he settled in like, Gee what took you so long!
The harem has crossed my mind!
If there is to be a coop, why just one lonely bachelor?
We sure didn't see this coming, but we are hooked!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like Bobbin is one lucky roo to have found you, good luck with him, and his soon to be harem!

Thank you for taking in this poor little guy. I just can't get over the cruel people that just dump birds (or kittens or puppies etc) and don't give the slightest care of what happens to them. Then again so many humans just dump babies like they are a sack of dirty laundry. I hope there is a special place they go eventually and are punished for their crime.
