Stray Rooster

Aw so sweet. I want to be Snow White! šŸ˜‚

No an RIR is head hen but a barred is a close second. I couldn’t tell by the butt who this was.
Also, how do we rate his manners when sharing a plate of snacks?

He looks like he's doing fairly well! I did notice that it appears like a couple of your hens are molting? Those hens might take longer to warm up to him because their pin feathers are hurting right now (and they don't want to be touched as a result).
Good morning! It’s really going well to my surprise! The mornings are a bit frantic since this seems to be when he wants to mate. The gals aren’t to keen on that part yet so they tend to stay in the coop longer than normal. But it eases up and they do great all through the day. Thanks for asking!
That's actually quite normal. I've had several roosters who's favorite time to mate was in the morning, even if they didn't have a hen to mate with.

Yes two gals are molting, one is extreme. I feel bad for her. What’s great is so far he hasn’t tried with those two…yet. He’s still hesitant with me coming near. He ate from my hand once and I’m wondering if I should keep trying that. I read all these horror stories about not to spoil a rooster but I don’t know what not to do. So far we are very happy with him.

Ok, that's good. From what I've seen, a rooster can typically tell if a hen is laying or not, so that might be why he's leaving them alone.
Some people hand feed their roosters, and I've done so myself, but yes, I'm aware of the horror stories. Most roosters won't attack if they're eating out of your hand, but you don't typically want the rooster getting that comfortable around you. Personally, I find it best that the rooster is taught to be submissive to you, even if it means he's not allowed to eat out of your hand.

Got it. Thanks. I wanted him to ā€œlikeā€ me but maybe it’s best if he keeps his distance.

Should I worry about his comb? He had a couple black spots and a whitish area when he got here but they seem darker now?

That looks like it's from him fighting. I would keep an eye on it for safe assurance, but it's not anything to be too concerned about from what I can see. They're just small cuts. I have a couple of hens who have small comb injuries like that right now from their everyday pecking order.

This guy showed up at my gate today, when I approached he walked off and a few hours later he is back and closer to my hen’s run. I threw him some scratch. What kind is he? So pretty. What would you all do? Let him in? Afraid he may hurt the girls though he talked to them through the fence which ā€œseemedā€ non aggressive. He won’t last long outside here. I posted on the only local app up here. View attachment 4237836
He's gorgeous! I'd pen him elsewhere for quarantine and do a fecal float on him before you let him in. You don't want to bring Marek's or AIV in to your girls.

He already was exposed to the flock by the time the OP found him.

That makes sense, since he was drawn to them in the first place. I think I'd still do a float test. Our vet charges less than $20 for that peace of mind. :fl

That is a handsome rooster ā¤ļø
He found his home ā¤ļø It is a beautiful how everything come about. My heart is singing with joy for your new rooster.

Over here sometime I heard reports that roosters were left in the bush land to fence for themselves. They of course suffer for it as they are not equip and predators. My heartache whenever I hear these reports. Today my heart sing reading your rooster story.ā¤ļø

You are wonderful to work so hard and give him a loving homeā¤ļøā¤ļø
