I'm sure if you get hens - he will come down to earth. A rooster can handle 10 hens - if he only has a couple they will get overbred and injured. You don't need a rooster to have eggs. You only need one if you intend to get fertile eggs that can be hatched. I mention this in case you don't want to get that involved with chickens.

Thanks to you all for being so friendly, helpful, and welcoming! . We've had a virtually unheard of cold-spell the last couple of days & I worried terribly about Keith (name is a long story. LOL) the stray rooster, but he is hanging tough. On closer ( but not much) inspection, I think he's not a Cubalaya, but maybe just a really cool and colorful regular old gamecock kind of rooster.... Tail is held too high....but the colors ... Iridescent green & golden with black...and the bright red comb.... And the long, kind of flowing tail feathers are just PRETTY....K, so I don't know. IF I can get closer & get a pic, hopefully you guys can tell me what he is. I don't mind being embarrassed if you say he is just a run of the mill yard bird. LOL

Oh, how very, very cool! Both a chicken fan and a Hunger Games fan!!!! . I teach, so I read the Hunger Games series years ago when the books first came out. I'm enjoying the movies now! My chicken coop is almost finished. If it would just stop raining on the weekends!!!! Keith the rooster is still doing well roosting in his tree, but I'm ready o move the girls in!

So far, no reason to catch him. It rains or storms every freaking weekend so the coop is being built bit by bit. The chicken house outside is done. The run is done. But the safety stuff isn't done & the roosts & laying boxes aren't in yet. Also, trying to plug all the little leaks in the roof....and the places around the edges where raccoon or possum hands might weasel in....Still working on snake-proofing, too. Keith is doing great, though. Comes within 6 feet when I call him (OK, IF he thinks I have food) LOL. Still a gorgeous chicken, even though my husband's dog chased him all over creation and wore both Keith and me out. ( I lost my breath & probably a year off my life, & Keith lost some feathers). Keith is a trooper. I expect he'll truly rule the roost once the weather cooperates & the roost is ready!
