Hi all!

If you followed my post a few weeks ago you’ll know I has to little ducklings to a Muscovy mumma!

Today now they’re 11 days old I decided to move them to a much bigger and lighter home. A large run with an attached ramp & Hutch for warmth. It is being kept in our stable for safely reasons as we have a different predators around due to spring time. It allows natural light and is much bigger for mumma duck to flap her wings.

Yesterday she seemed ok in there but she was pushing at the wire walls trying to get out a lot.
Last night I brought in her buddy’s Greg & Peg the geese who she was brought up with since she was a baby. They also slept in the stable but in a different run. I had a hatch of 6 last year incubated but sadly this week a mink attacked 3 of them in their house overnight hence why Greg and peg are sleeping in the stable until we secure the outside from mink. (And fox Cubs 🤦🏼‍♀️)

This morning after what I could gather was a peaceful night, Greg the goose was obsessed with the mumma duck & baby’s to the point that I had to carry him out of the stable to his grass for the day. He wasn’t hissing at them but he would not leave them, it was bazar! He was trying everything he could to get back there and when I allowed it to see what he did he just stood there looking at them. And mumma was trying to get at out the cage again.

I allowed mumma duck to come out to see Greg as obviously they’re buddies and mumma duck just gave him the occasional nip— not like an I’m gonna attack you nip… I have actually have no idea what she was doing.

Anyway. I’m concerned that I’m stressing out both parties…. This was their first night bunked together and I thought it was going well until this morning. Mumma duck is so desperate to leave her safe house but it’s just not an option until the ducklings are at least another few weeks old. It’s like sending them out to their certain death around here. Crows everywhere, apparently now mink.. foxes… magpies… even a bloody Herron! 🤦🏼‍♀️

I also thought maybe Greg and peg being in the stable at night (separate houses) would almost provide an extra protection from rats as they’ll see off anything.

Anyway- do you think I’m stressing out both parties?? Is it possible that mumma duck could turn on her ducklings? Or so you think they’ll get use to it? And mumma duck is just getting use to her new home?

Just another thought- Greg & peg have just returned to the outdoors after 2 weeks as peg has an accident with her beak so had to be isolated in a stable.

I’m wondering if they’re stressed as to where their two best buddy’s add who have been killed by the mink? Is it possible for them to be stressed about losing their two best buds? And maybe reacting to seeing the Muscovy again after 2 weeks?

u know trying to analyze animal behavior is fun...but speculative at the most, so just enjoy them !!!! and would you like being moved from your home because someone thought more light would be great for you?

Not an extremely helpful comment. The ducklings were living in a completely dark hen house with fairy lights for lighting so moving them was essential for their well-being.

I didn’t move them for the fun of it. I literally moved them so they could have Ventilation, safety & light.

Surly analysing the behaviour of animals is a big part of this page? My extremely well looked after brood lost all their buddy’s this week in a terrible attack. I’m just trying to work out if this could be the reasoning behind their strange behaviour.

Ducks can pine for a lost mate. I am not sure about being stressed by loss of buddies. My new drake is still after 10 days shouting for his two females that he has left behind in his old home, but he has stopped shouting for them during the night for them. He will get used to being with his new drake friends in my back yard.

Thank you, there is an odd thing actually that I’m not sure is normal or not… so I had 2 drakes and 2 female geese. The drakes decided that the female geese were going to be their mates and tried to hump them frequently 🤣 so in a strange way maybe they are pining for their lost partners…..

So both geese are females? My geese are obsessed with babies. My gander who i just lost in Feb at age 14 was the best pappa goose ever with ducklings. My Muscovy mama hated when I moved her into a large space after her ducklings hatched. But they hatched on top of the poop board so I didn't have a choice. She did settle down after I opened the area up so they had the run of the whole coop after everyone went out for the day.
Can mama come out at all where she is with her ducklings? I'd just watch her through today and hopefully she'll settle down.
Sorry about the mink attack:hugs

This is mumma ducks new coop! There’s a large hutch up the ramp for warmth

Yes similar situation here, ducklings hatched in an inconvenient area, I left them there for as long as I could but yesterday had to be moving day!

New hutch
