Struck Gold at TSC last couple weeks...

That is a porcelain blue. Lucky you. They are beautiful when grown. My friend just sold a mated pair for $60.00 she too raises them until larger and sells. there is no harm in doing that. I have my own flock that I will never part with then I have the mind set that the ones I buy cant stay. The sale of them funds the care for my own so there is no out of pocket expense. I pay myself back for what I paid for the chicks then I put the rest in an envelope for the care of my own. It all works out. I dont make it known to the employees of TSC because like I said if they catch on they will do this for themselves and take out the good ones.

I think that is smart Amy. It's never a bad idea to cut the overhead cost however possible. And as a plus you may be helping the chicks in the process. A lot of people get them and just neglect them and they die within the first year. At least you can be more choosy about the home they go to and raise them to a hearty age before they go.

I have just started out with Showgirls and Silkies. I've purchased hatching eggs and babies from different breeders to get a variety of colors and bloodlines. My friends are freaking out that I've gone from 0 to 19 in 5 short months...but I keep telling them that I will be choosing extra roos to sell as well as lesser quality hens once they are old enough to tell which sex they are. Who am I kidding? I look at them all doe-y eyed, name each one of them, laugh at their antics and realize that I probably have a bunch of "lifers". It's all good...once they are laying I will sell THOSE babies...if I can get used to the idea of selling my grand-chix!

I don't think I was cut out for this to be a business, so more power to those of you who are finding a way to make money at it! I'm also secretly glad that my TSC doesn't sell Silkies or I'd be in a heap o' trouble!

I have one JUST like that one. I had no idea even what to try to look at for her/him. It's my tiniest (and my favorite). My kids called it my pocket buddy. It likes to just lay on m and cuddle down as long I let it. :0) So now I can at least have an idea of what to look up! Thanks!!! Ours is named "Cottonball" because he was no bigger than a cotton ball!!

i would love to quit my job and make my money from doing something with chickens. i just LOVE chickens. i love silkies too and my TSC never sells them. i just ordered 12 hatching eggs from MPC. can't wait!!

This is my second year with chickens. I live in the country and I had no idea what kind of money are in chickens. My husband laughed at me until he saw what I make selling the silkies. Ages newborn to about 4 weeks, I can get about $7 $10 each. I dont like them to go this young unless the people know what their doing. Then 4-8 weeks about $10-$15 ea. Then older, egg laying or pairs then the price is even more. I only paid about $2.00 ea for them. Yes I had to drive store to store, use gas and feed them but it's really not that much. We have a farm down the road that does all kinds of feed and bedding so that is dirt cheap. I actually garbage pick wood and wire fencing to make my own brooders, I use old plack n play, toy boxes, totes, you name it I can make a brooder out of it. My animals are very well cared for and the cleanest chickens anyone will ever find....I give mine baths and paint their nails....yes really!

I'm not a farmer or anything, I learn as I go, I wanted chickens last year and I couldnt stop. Then I started hatching my own. I had about 60 chickens but a hawk got most of them over the winter. So what I had left I incubated now those guys are going out to the coop. Last summer I made $500 selling silkies....not much but it helps!!! Now I have these other breeds and hoping I get a pair so I can hatch and sell those babies...I'm always looking for easy ways to make a buck. I dont want to go to work when my last little one is in school this fall!!!

that's awesome!!! i wish i lived in the country. i grew up in the country and havent been able to go back since. :( maybe the Lord is preparing a place for me in heaven full of green pastures and hundreds of chickens? lol! i totally agree with you not wanting to work when you have a little one! i use to be a nurse but have done home daycare ever since my son was born cuz i wanted to be home with him. your silkie "operation" sounds fun. chickens are extremely addicting!! as anyone here will attest to!! :)
