ventilation is a necessary requirement for life whether for human or chicken so fiance' this is an unwinnable arguement . so giv e in & go to habitat for humanity recycle store get a couple windows , home depot for hardware mesh & git-er-done. You did a good job building , just needs a few refinements which I am sure you are talented enough to do .

I will show this to him! I'm pretty sure I understand what you mean, for the most part. I am just seriously challenged when it comes to building. I can put together a desk from IKEA with all the instructions but the coop was a 'wing it' kind of thing that the fiancee' did. It turned out really great considering he didn't plan it beyond having a picture in his mind. But he really did not listen to me when I said I wanted more ventilation.

Does that mean I should NOT have him cut windows in addition to raising the roof? Or should I do that as well?

Thank you very much for your input!

Thank you everyone for your replies, I did make him read the entire thread and he finally sheepishly said he was wrong and he would fix it. He is such a good guy. He is so tired of building the coop that when I told him to add windows he was like 'I THOUGHT I WAS DONE.

He's going to do it today.

What you could do is make the roof (Both sides) hindged at the top. Then, make a couple of big (Also hindged) hardware clothed door/roof panels to keep the chickens in when the roof is opened up. You could rig up simple props to keep the roof panels opened. You could make the props adjustable, depending on the weather. With the hinged roof panels, You would not have to worry about cutting extra holes in the coop. You would have plenty of ventilation, Plus shade, in the top part of the coop. That would seem to me to be the easiest solution to the problem. But you better do something, because with Fla. heat, The results you get with the coop as it is, won't be pretty.
