Students!!! AAAAAGH!

If they didn't do their final, that shows you how "serious" they are about their coursework. I mean, it was a take home test for goodness sakes! If they are college students, which I believe they are, they should know better. Maybe it's time for them to learn a hard life lesson.

(BTW: I'm a college student myself).

Of course! It is always the teacher's fault.

I had a student who routinely missed classes. He actually missed so many that I thought he dropped... but he comes waltzing in during the fourth week of the class "Oh, sorry, I was at my cousin's wedding in Hawaii for two weeks".

Um, yeah, you couldn't have told me about that BEFORE you left?

So I warned him that he needed to come regularly for the rest of the quarter to have the chance to pass it. He still shows up irregularly, often comes in inappropriate clothes (it was an equine halter breaking course, came in flip flops), and complaining about ADHD. "I caaaan't work with my horse today... I have ADHD. It's too haaaard".

At the end of the quarter, I get a 2 page e-mail from above student. "Oh, I just wanted to tell you how much I loved your class, and how much I learned. Oh, and I have a horse, and he's amazing and I did all his training. Oh, and I need AT LEAST a B in this class, but an A would be great, too!!"

My reply: "Don't worry, you will get the grade that you deserve"

So I failed him... only student I ever had to fail.

At the high school I teach at we drop students after 10 consecutive absences, unless they are on suspension. Maybe suggest this at your next teacher's meeting?

This is at a university... he's an adult, and if he's going to exhibit failing behavior, I have no problem failing him. If I don't do it, it will be his boss later on in life.

I am a grad student...how did your students make it grad school with that attitude?!?! That is what the undergrads do at our university, hence most of us grad students keep to ourselves. Apparently, some of these students clearly needed a swift kick in the rear while growing up!

TO OP...FAIL THEM! A conflicting schedule is a legitimate excuse in this circumstance IF he/she had come to talk to you well before the deadline. Since he/she didn't...tough luck. Time to grow up! In the work force, you can't go tell your boss, oh sorry I didn't meet the deadline on time, I was waiting on [insert excuse]. Some people need to learn the tough way. Oh and the student in the computer lab...print it or put it on the thumb drive it it can't be emailed. He's a big boy, he can wipe his own bottom!

The longer I work in student services (I'm not faculty), the less interested I am in excuses. Show up, learn, do a good job, and move on. That's what school is for. Don't complain to me that you're a 28-year-old adult and then act like an entitled, spoilt child. I have NO patience for those students.

I'm so thankful for the awesome students I do have. They outnumber the rotten ones by 30:1.

And when I'm REALLY fed up, my favorite thing to say is:

"My job would be so much easier without these darn students!"

Man, that sucks for you! I live in the middle of nowhere and the only road that leads to civilization constantly has major accidents on it and jackknifed trucks that shuts down traffic for hours... so I know how you feel!

I have to say though, while most of them ARE just being lazy, things do come up. This week is finals week for me and I conveniently got the flu (could have been the swine flu too! the last outbreak was only 15 miles from my house, it could have spread that fast). Anyways, I was super sick and missed two finals and couldn't finish any of my homework. I was having muscle spasms and a high fever all night long and for half the next day. I emailed my teachers before hand and I'm scheduled to take the finals during the first week of summer school now. I was so stressed, really freaking out about my grades, but they were all so understanding and I really appreciated that. So things do come up sometimes... but they should have contacted you before the deadline though.
