Stuff stuck to the rear end of my chick who hatched - can I pull it off?

So usually I would just leave it alone and let it dry off, but it is stuck to the chick's leg making it hard for her to walk. Would it be awful if I gently tried to remove it?

No, it wouldn't be awful. A little warm water should help get it off. I believe it's better to remove egg pieces and membrane from the chicks while they are still moist/damp then to wait until they are dried and the stuff is glued on making it that much harder to get off and having to re wet them. There are people that disagree, but that's ok...lol

Just be very careful, as that stuff is most likely attached to the umbilical cord. If you can see where the cord is, and can carefully clip the cord with a pair of clean scissors (I like to stay as far away from the chick's abdomen as possible) you'll be less likely to injure the chick if the goop were to get pulled on when removing it.

On closer inspection it looks like there is some unabsorbed yolk sac and all kinds of stuff. Should I just leave it alone? Its tripping on the long stuff (umbilical cord?), but I don't want to mess with that egg sac?

Yes, that is unabsorbed yolk and egg goo. The good thing is is it's a rather small amount so it should absorb it fairly well, the bad news is it could get ruptured before that happens, and that's never a good thing, usually resulting in death. I would definitely confine him and hope that he absorbs it quickly w/no problem. once that's absorbed you can deal with the other left overs.
