Hello!

Back in March I received three 6 week old pullets, including a lavender orpington. They are are now about 22 weeks old, and two of the three are laying, except for the lavender orpington (named Violet). Now, I know it’s still early and that orpingtons can lay a bit later. However, I’m a bit stumped as to whether or not this pullet may be a cockerel. Comb and wattle are not very large or very red, but there are a few suspicious tail feathers. AND - Violet has taken to crowing at 5 a.m. Four or five times in a row and then not again until the next morning. But, Violet’s appearance does not scream rooster to me. And she (he?) hasn’t made any overtures towards the other hens.

So - a cockerel or just a weird pullet? Can anyone take a look at some photos I took and take a shot at this one? Thanks in advance!

I have a lavender that did the same thing! Both of mine were very late layers and one crowed. She also developed large facial features. Once I got a rooster, she stopped crowing, now she's just a happy member of the pack :idunno

If you only have hens, then occassionally one will take up the "rooster mantle" so to speak and will crow, although not as load as a male. They are usually the more dominant and watchful of the flock. As long as its only 4 or 5 times and she stops, count yourself lucky. Good luck, she really is a pretty gal!
