I was taking care of my DILs chickens back in Feb and one got take by a HAWK? I think, because I had to chase her hens out from under the deck to get them to go into the coop. Then, if that wasn't bad enough a possum got into the coop a few nights later and killed one of her hens. I did get the possum in a live trap the next night when it came back for more. Sorry for your loss.

Our house is on the side of the mountain here in Greenville so the deck begins at about 15 feet off the ground and goes to about a foot and a half where it meets the deck. Yeah it smells awesome in the summer when they get up there. The hawk had her pinned down at about the 5 foot maker by the hose.

Haha thanks! Everyone knows that all baby chicks are girls when they're born (duh) so when my friend's 4 year old went to naming everyone, she aptly named the roo after herself. As far as protection goes, we'd like to keep them free ranging since they've done it their whole lives; I tend to think they'd be unhappy going from full range to just a perimeter a space around the coop. We were thinking more about getting a Livestock guardian dog or a mini donkey.
Anyone have thoughts on either option? Not sure how a mini donkey would keep hawks away but I know 4 legged creatures loathe them
