I went to my mothers yesterday leaving 5, 3 weekers in a cage out on the ground. I neglected to watch the weather and a storm blew through. I am an hour away and can find no one to go put them up. I know they are dead by the time I get home and when I drove up one loan EE is standing shivering. The rest are all layed out not moving and as far as I can see not breathing. I take my new hatches out of the bator and stuff the one loan chick in to warm up and crank the heat up. I go out to remove the bodies and grabbed the first one and it peeps weakly. I rush her in and stick her in the bator. I then check the other 3. They are also barely breathing. I get them warmed up and remove the barely moving but stronger chicks in a rushed brooder. I put my new hatches back in. You guessed it I forgot to lower the temps. Checked 15 minutes later and these chicks are layed out baking. Get them out and put on wet towel to maybe cool off. One perks back up but the other two are gasping. Get the bator back down to 90 and put them back. Before I finally got to bed I had one perky chick one that was trying to come back, and one dead chick. All five of my 3 weekers are alive and healthy. This morning the 2 new hatches are ok. Well we are waiting on one to be more OK it is rocked back on its feet looking a little confused. Hope I did not fry her little brain cells to bad. I feel like an idiot.
Lessons learned:
Always check the weather
Keep brooder supplies up and in one place
Remember to check temps in bator before sticking new babies back in.
