styrofoam eating

Ummm...I wouldn't be feeding my chickens styrofoam...

Great...now I'm going to realize just how much styrofoam I have laying around now....

I found out the expensive way that they do eat styrofoam.

I cleaned and disinfected a hovabator and leaned it against the house to dry.. when I came back a few hours later, there was not enough of the top left to half cover the bottom half.. I moved all of it into the garage and put it up on a shelf. a while later I found a chicken in the garage jumping up and pecking the bator with each jump.. LOL

It's not something you would actually go out of your way to feed them, but it won't kill them. Mine devoured an entire three inch thick styrofoam box (used to be Kitty's house) a couple months ago and they're still alive and kicking....and right now outside probably looking for more styrofoam to eat.

I have an idea. To satisfy their craving for styrofoam, just feed them rice cakes. It's the same consistency and I would imagine has the same taste.

Don't know about it making their shells harder, but mine love to peck it too. Had some of that styrofoam insulation left over after getting our house insulated, and they went nutso over it.
Well, at least we all know now what to do with styrofoam, rather than let it go to the landfills. hee hee
