Styrofoam Incubator

Thanks for the tip the adapter I'm using can switch to different voltages so I'm covered there. I just wired it to the fan tonite and it worked

. However I came upon a snag while hooking up the Thermos to the lightbulb. The lightbulb did come on for a couple of seconds ( I'm using a 25 W) but blacked out soon after and left the bulb with a milky glaze and the wires inside the bulb have broken off. I'm assuming the voltage I'm using is too high? I'm using the cord that came with the lamp assembly kit.

try using another bulb, and make sure the lamp assembly kit is rated for the voltage you have in the house. I've seen bulbs burn out like you explained, and they were just at the end of their useful life. Experiment with different watt light bulbs, you'll find that alittle higher wattage bulb will work better. GL

Thankyou for the tip looks like that bulb was just a faulty bulb. I hooked up another one and had no problems with it. I just gotta putting everything together in the bator and ill be done. I'm hoping to finish it all tommorow and then I still need to test it. Since this bator I'm actually building for someone else.

as for how much a incubator would cost it depends on where the materials are bought. These in the pic were all found in my barn, so to make the incubator it didn't cost me anything as I allready had it.

the coolerbator as alot of people on BYC use is only a couple of bucks porcelain light fixture, bulb, thermostat from an old hot water heater, or water bed heater control, all found at home, but only a few bucks to buy. hardware cloth from the local hardware store, thermometers, hygrometers. All this doesn't add up to very much. maybe $20-30.

Well I finally finished building TWO bators

the first one im gonna keep as a keepsake but the second was built for somebody. Im not sure how much I should charge him for it. I had to buy alot of stuff since I really didnt have some of the materials on me. I think all in all just to build one of these cost me 55$ to make 30$ for the ac adapter and pc fan and 20 for bottle lamp kit and thermostat. I also spent 12$ for tools but idk if I should charge him that or not since the tools I didnt have were the wire snips and strippers. Also I will post pics of finished bator.

Yes I did the only thing left I need to do on the bator is put the window in and thats pretty much it.Heck I wouldnt of even been able to accomplished this withought all you guys on here.

I had a real hard time trying to get the hardware cloth to lay flat till I just gave up on it and I found something i liked even better. I happend to be at HEB and saw some cooking sticks and a couple of those cheap portable cooking tops that you can take with you. So all I had to do was get some hog fencing I had and do some cutting and put the cooking tops on and they fit perfectly legth wise in the bator. Saved me whatever hours of agony with the hardware cloth and whats better is I can always get more if they start to get really dirty or whatnot.

Well i am having the hardest time loading pictures on here but heres the finished product. This was the only picture that would load unfortunatly.Ive also been working on keeping a steady temp in the bator. So far Ive either gotten it 3degrees too high or 3degrees too low.I was using a 60W lightbulb and the temp was too high so i switched to a 40W lightbulb and it was a little low but now it seems to be staying at a temp of 100.1 but im gonna have to keep an eye on it.
