Thank you! Yes, we do have the coop and the run already set up. I was thinking of slowly starting to introduce them to the great outdoors and coop setup this week - each day for a little bit, weather permitting.Hello Maria, and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
You should get 2 more chicks. You want at least 3 but integrating a lone chick is very difficult. When you only have a pair, if something happens to one of them the other would be left all alone.
Do you have your coop and run built and ready to go? Your chicks are ready to be outside now and off heat very soon.
I think they will be ok outside permanently, they look fully feathered. Heat will be a bigger factor than cold being that it's summer. If they start to pant, you can run a fan for them, some love to sit right in front of a fan to cool off. You can put ice cubes in the waterers. And any bird that is overly heated should be brought inside in AC to cool down, heat stroke will kill. The weather cooperated this week!
They were out for majority of each day and like their new home. We still keep them inside for the nights and in the morning when the grass is still wet.
For the next two weeks the forecast is not the greatest - rain and more rain.
They are 4 weeks today (and much more plump and bigger than in these images, I just realized, what a difference a week makes!!!).
With the weather forecast being rain and warm 24-26 - can I move them to the coop permanently (with the heat plate still available to them) and assume they are smart enough to stay inside and regulate themselves if they need to, or should I still keep them indoors for the most part? We run air conditioning inside the house so the temperature isn’t really any different from what they are forecasting, it is more the rain I am worried about and if they decide to venture outside of the coop do you think they will be fine?
