we always use a metal garbage can half full of water. scatter grain on top and put it close to something they can climb and see into the can. mice and rats jump in for the bait and drown. no reset. catches as many as the can will hold. and you just have to scoop out the bodies. put a piece of chicken wire, chain link or field fence over the top to keep out the chickens. the holes are too small for chickens but big enough for even the biggest rat.
