successfully treated for blackhead but will it come back?

Hello all!

My first year raising turkeys and I had a blackhead outbreak last month. Treated with metronidazole and seems to have gone away. My question is, will blackhead show its ugly face again and can I use metronidazole more than once before processing the birds? They are only 12 weeks old and I'm hoping to butcher at 16-18 weeks as I don't care for super large birds.
Any advice is welcome!

Did you also worm them with Safeguard or Valbazen? If not, that's something that might prevent another outbreak.

Their is a product called Strike 3 by Durvet that you can buy at Tractor Supply. Its a wormer thats in pellet form and is mixed into your feed. It will get rid of the Caecal worm which is the host of the blackhead protozoa. You can use this wormer right up to 3 days before your going harvest your birds.(Thats what it says on the package anyway) I wouldnt harvest birds on Metronidazole for consumption unless they been off it for 3 to 4 weeks....

Thanks for the advice Kathy, haven't wormed and I definitely should! Going to go to tractor supply tomorrow and I'll look for something there. Always used panacure to worm my animals, will it work for Cecal worms?

Thanks oldhawkins, I wasn't too thrilled on giving them the metronidazole to begin with, I just have so much time and money invested I didn't have a choice.
Going to worm them tomorrow and hope blackhead wont strike again! Not only is the medication expensive but the withdrawal seems rather long.

You can use Panacur or Safeguard for cecal worms. The dose that three vets recommended to me is 0.23ml per pound orally and repeat in ten days.

Bought some safeguard today, 10% suspension or 100mg/ml.

Do you happen to have the mg per pound? Bottle recommends .6ml for a 25lbs goat

Goats get way less than birds, they only get 5mg/kg, but birds, dogs ad cats get 10x that for for 3-5 days.

Just to be clear, if one wants to treat the cecal worm it's 0.23ml per pound ounce and repeat in ten days, but if they want to treat for capillary worms, it's 0.23 ml per pound for five days..

Oh, and you can use the liquid or paste of both panacur and safeguard... dose is the same.
