I have been here a couple of weeks now and have seen nothing but the best of the best.... I have been on baseball card forums for a number of years and they pale in comparison to the pleasant experience that it is to sit and read (and learn) on this site. Welcome to the site and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do....

Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us... it's good to have an unbiased comparison and review from time to time.

I am vascillating between "yes, I want to get some chickens again" and "no, I really don't want to get into more animals again." I learned to love chickens in the '50's as a kid in 4-H on a dairy farm. As the youngest (and smallest), they were the natural fit for me, and they were my friends. Had a nice trio of Light Brahmas that took prizes every year at the state fair unless the rooster attacked the judges (which he frequently did), but that all fell apart the day he took after my 4 year old brother. He weighed more than my brother, and as he chased Casey, my mother snatched him up and "dispatched" him on the spot.

There went my trio! We also had Silver Laced Wyndottes. In the 80's, I moved to a rural home where I did wildlife rehab for a few years, but gradually acquired some chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese along with rabbits that others did not want. I loved to go out into their yard and sit down in a lawn chair while they all grazed around me. My favorite turkey felt compelled to try to roost on the back of the chair (or my shoulder ... ouch) and if I stretched my legs out, in no time, I'd have two huge Brahma hens walking their way into my lap. (yes, I opted for Wyndottes and Brahmas again.) When I moved to a place where I could not take my animals, I worried so about them. I found a lady who wanted them as pets just as I did, so I felt a little better about it.... just a little. And that's where my doubts come from.

For me, like many of you, they are pets, and I would never consider them differently. I could care less about eggs, and when I had an abundance of hens (and eggs) I gave the eggs to the dogs. (My dogs had beautiful coats!). I worry about what will happen to my current family of dogs (5 of 'em) should something happen to me, and to take on more animals only complicates that. So, I am not sure what I will be doing, but in the meantime, I am thinking about it in earnest while I work on my current project ... a pond for my dogs to play in. Once that is done, well, I'll just have to see what happens. I will probably give in. So, in the meantime, I'll keep an eye on what is happening here.
thanks,
