Me and my daughter were out with the chickens yesterday and decided to give them some popcorn. My favorite black rooster just stared at the popcorn and made a funny clucking noise. Then we saw the hens come running and ate it. He did that several times. So I tried hand feeding him a piece. He took it from me, dropped it on the ground and called the hens for it again. What a sweetheart.

I've seen my rooster doing this too. Now that we have 2 new hens recently added to our group, I've noticed Roo only is a kind and patient gentleman with the two submissive hens. The one unresponsive hen, he won't allow to eat the best bites of chow - he pushes her away.

Mine does the same thing. It actually makes me feel bad to go in and throw scratch around. I feel like I'm making him neurotic as he tries to get the hens to come eat what he's found.

Here's a family-friendly video of a rooster doing the typical rooster "food call": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K27rJ1LwbKg

If
you can learn to imitate it yourself (I think it sounds a lot like, "Tk tk tk tk tk..."), you can make the call and your chickens will come running for treats. I think that's why the old-fashioned, "Herrrrre, chick, chick, chick..." call works so well. It sounds similar.

Our main man,Boots, will take grapes from us, one at a time and drop them in front of a hen
then come back for another one. He works so hard doing this but continues until the grapes are gone.
A few days ago, one of the young roosters came at me and spured my leg. Boots came running and took that youngster to the ground. He held him there a few minutes, then let him go......
Boots is our very favorite .

He also sits on my husbands lap to be petted. It is a kick.

Ours is very good about `tidbitting'. However, he will, occasionally, pick up and drop straw, empty snail shells, etc. and call with excitement to the girls. Any hen that gets close enough gets `covered'. This is deception pure and simple.
Most often the wiser heads stand at a distance to assess the food item, when they hear that slightly higher than normal inflection in his `call to treats'.
