Sudden death of hen

This is not real unusual. It is called sudden death syndrome. They are alive and perfectly fine - and then they are not. A very quick way to go, usually almost no sign of distress.

An old time chicken lady once told me, that she thought it was a genetic defect in the internal organs like the heart. As the bird gets bigger, it is harder for the body to keep up. It is just a genetic failure, nothing you did.

She certainly showed no signs of distress. I take very good care of my girls and are around them several times a day. I need to except that it was something internal and nothing I did to attribute to her passing even though my heart is very saddened. Thank you.

I necropsied my beloved pet hen recently and I’m 100% glad I did it, even though it was difficult and strange. All my questions were answered and I learned conclusively that I could not have saved her no matter what else I did. This brings me peace.
