Hello out there, fairly new to quail and I've encountered a problem. I came home to find one of my birds lame on her right leg. I picked her up and the toes seem completely limp. she is eating and drinking normally and will hobble around on her good leg, but is mostly resting in one spot.

I noticed that some of my other birds (all female) are being aggressive today. so I'm not sure if maybe someone attacked her for some reason? I'm at a loss here for what could have happened in the last 24 hours.

background: I keep my birds on the ground, on 1" poultry wire. they have a raised indoor area off the ground, containing wood shavings. no bumble foot symptoms noted.

thanks!

Do you have any other small animals in with them, like a goat? If you do, then it could've stepped on her foot. She could've gotten her foot stuck under a wire, or under a gate or some other structure in their enclosure. The other quail could've attacked her, but I've got no idea why theyd go for her foot... Hope she gets better soon!!!

update: she is still curling the foot and toes when she walks. she's able to move around, get to food and water so I'm just going to keep an eye one it. But I have. feeling she's going to be my gimpy girl from now on.

if that were mites then the issue could impossibly stayed undetected ! and it takes a while too before any bird will feel numb in that section of the body ! also this bird can still curl the toes which usually indicates that no mites are involved because when mites are involved and the bird became lame like that the toes would just break of ! not being still goed curly at all .
I should more think about the possibility the bird has injured herself in some way , altough that usually ends up in no eating nor drinking some birds tend to act normal , it hurts often but that also depends on HOW the injury went , if the leg is broken it is perfectly possible for both situations , the bird can eat or feel to sore to eat , depending on where the fracture exactly took place and how fractured it is .
Can you try to examen the both legs and toes and tell me you can feel a difference in temperature and structure please ?

Treating for leg mites won't hurt her and may fix her lameness.
once damage is done that severe it will not fix anymore , sorry to tell this but when mites have caused it ... you can only prevent the leg and foot to become ill even further as the mites feed on tissue which can not be restored .
