tonight I went to feed my birds and one of my quail looked sick. I picked her up and found a lot of blood and what looked like guts sticking out of her vent.

I isolated her and now I am wondering if there is anything I can do for her.

I'm also wondering what things might cause this.

Prolapse is caused from a stuck egg. You need to check to see if she still has an egg stuck. With some KY Jelly or Vaseline on your pinky finger, gently insert your finger into her vent. If she has a stuck egg, you will feel it there. If she does you can try soaking her in warm water for 10 or 15 mins. Her lower half in warm..not luke warm, not hot, but good and warm. This will relax her abdomen muscles as they can keep the egg from passing. Lube up her vent area as well.

If the egg does not pass, and you can see the egg, you will need to make a tiny hole in the egg and with a syringe and no needle, suck out the contents, colapse the egg and gently drag the eggshell out with your pinky finger. Try not to cut her with the shards or get any yolk inside of her.

If there is no egg present, push her parts back inside her and apply some prep H to her vent and inside to reduce swelling. Keep pushing it back in and using the prep H until it stays in. Keep her in a dimly lit area for 8 hour a day, 16 hours of complete darkness. This will stop her from laying until she heals.

You may need to put her down if none of this works and she is suffering.

In the future, make sure she is not competing for water in her cage as the number one reason birds become egg bound is dehydration. Do not feed young layers really high protein feeds and never force lay young layers as well.

Good luck and I hope you can get her healed up soon!
