Sudden temperature drop?

I have such a hard time not helping my girls out! They just sit there and don't move around much. I have the light on today to get some warmth in the coup before tonight's low of -15 with a wind chill of -35. :/ Poor birds! My white crested polish girls aren't impressed.

Those icicles!  Someone told me that Wyoming was expecting in the double-digits below zero?  I'm in Texas and we are expected to go from a high of 77 today to a high of something like 55 tomorrow.  Definitely not as frigid, but still a steep drop!
We are in Texas also, San Antonio area, and it's expected to drop below 40's all week with highs of 51. I'm afraid to my girls out with the rooster for fear of freezing. They have yet to be outside. We turned old horse stable into an 3sided enclosed chicken coop. The open side gets some wind but mostly ventilation. When is cold too cold?

I am about 3 hours north of you in Coleman, TX. our temps dropped to the 30 last night and have stayed there all day today. My girls went outside at 6:30 this a.m. just as if it was any other day. In fact, they tended to be more impacted by the heat last summer than this cold spell.

I have friends in San Marcos who tell me their temps dropped 30 degrees in an hour a bit ago. So, if this is not all the way to you yet do what you need to do to be prepared.

Birds are very in tune with what they need to do to stay warm (or cool for that matter). Just be sure there are no direct drafts on them. Open their coop and let them make the choice about what they can/need to do. Add some cracked corn or oats to their diet for a while to help them generate extra body heat and they should be just fine.

We are under a winter weather advisory and a wind chill advisory for tonight and into tomorrow. Winds expected to be North and Northwest at 15-30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, and wind chills are forecast to be -25 to -35 degrees. More snow and blowing snow as well. They've at least revised our actual overnight temperature forecast from -19 to -4....if that's much of an improvement. I love Wyoming, I love Wyoming, I love Wyoming...........

Definitely not too cold. We had this ice storm here in TX a couple years back with daytime highs in the 20's and mine made it through just fine then! As long as they stay dry and have a place to get out of the wind.

Keep telling yourself that. Wyoming is absolutely beautiful. But it does get cold. A lot colder than here in West Texas. Hope you weather the weather with some degree of comfort. Stay Warm.
Thanks! I'd be a lot happier if I didn't have to go anywhere tonight, but I have a town council meeting.

On a brighter note, checked on the girls and Baby Scout just before I sat down here and they are doing just great! The wind break in the run is making it almost balmy in there! It's 19 degrees inside the run with no wind and 12 degrees outside with lots of wind. I imagine if it was sunnier it would be even warmer in there. Scout will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and even he's running around in the run, following Mom, getting a drink of water or two, and scratching in the litter for goodies. Then as soon as his mom lays down he's right under her for quick warmup.

These chicken critters are remarkable for their ability to adapt and do well no matter what the temperatures!

If I could adapt as well as my chickens I would be a more peaceful person that is for sure. Be careful on you outing tonight. Watch out for ice.
