How is the health with this breed? It sounds like fertility for them is reeaalll good, but I've not seen anything mentioned about how they do as they go from egg, to chick, to juvie, etc. I have a chance to purchase some kinda local- 2 hrs away, and I'm sitting on the fence. I love the wheaten color, and I like the meatiness aspect but again wondering what draw backs (health, temperament, etc) there are with this breed, if any.

Thanks!

Personally, there were a couple losses out of the ones I hatched (bought eggs) but since then I haven't lost any here. IDK why that first foundation stock lost a few, but as long as it obviously wasn't inherited, I feel better about it.

Idk who or what deal you had going to buy some... but I live in ETN... I have a pair for sale that I could deliver to Knoxville if you wanted to meet halfway. Just saying....

the auction is on here under 8 weeks and older section. I'll take $40 off for shipping if you won. I also have a few eggs in the incubator, but just set them yesterday so it will be a few weeks.

Thanks for the offer of meeting halfway. I'm 45 minutes for everywhere- Johnson City, Bristol, Boone (NC), Abington ( VA),LOL.
Before I jump into this breed I want to do a bit more research. There's just not a lot of information out there about them. Or I should say, the regular sites don't have a lot of detail other than stating the obvious.
Couple more questions, how is the feed conversion,>how much feed to gain flesh<, egg laying< is that reduced because of a more meat producing bird<, and finally how do they do free ranging<can they do are they little beggars that would have to stay penned to stay healthy? I am drawn to how they look, but if they are delicate to keep it might be better if I pass on these.

That is understandable, like I said, I have some in the incubator now too.

Feed: they eat less than other LF I have. Reason being, they lay white eggs and brown egg layers eat more.
Egg laying: Once they start, they don't stop. For me, they were late to start but that could have been that I had hatched them late in the season and the timing with the weather wasn't right.
Free Ranging: They are far from a "babied bird". In Austria, they don't baby them the way Americans do... in most every way they treat them better, which includes tons of range space.

If you know anyone who speaks German, there is tons of information online. Even a few YouTube videos... which is where I got most my info before I got them. But they are in German with Austrian accents.

I have hatched lots of chicks and have never had any health issues. The seem pretty hardy to me so far. Also, every egg that develops hatches with out and problems or leg issues. I have been very happy with them. I have found that some of the other recently imported birds have problems but not the Sulmtalers.

I have not kept track of food conversion but my roo is a chow hound. His feeder in outside the coop and when I let them out in the morning her runs straight for that feeder and could care less about the girls. I find that kinda funny. My other roosters are way more interested in the ladies.
