Sulmtalers Thread

Hello,
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!
My husband has Sulmtaler eggs in the bator from Widget Creek and he just bought a pair from Sunfire Farms. I'm still learning about chickens, it seems to be something new about them everyday as they get older. I just wanted to say hello to everyone.

One of the pullets had just started to lay, found a hidden nest with two eggs in it! She is 6 months old.
FInally!! The brown egg is for comparison, its a normal large egg.

I just love the shape of a Sulmtaler egg don't you? Congrats! First eggs are so exciting.

Hatching is always a thrill...1 more week to go.

Sulmtaler chicks are the cutest!

Hello everyone!
I have read where the Sulmtalers hatch in 20 days. That being so, do you stop turning them on day 17 or the normal 18th day?
Thanks, Eric

I am in Alabama, so temp, room humidity etc will be different, but what I do is day 0-16 room humidity (30-40% here in Alabama). Day 17 up to 50% humidity. When first pip, up it to 62-65% humidity, and after the first one hatches the humidity raises itself to around 70% for the remainder of the hatch. I use a hovabator with fan and have had excellent Sulmtaler hatches using this method. And my Sulmtaler shells are fairly thick compared to my legbars and barnevelders! Also, my Sulmtaler chicks seem remarkably HUGE to be in such a small to medium size egg. Best of luck!
Fly pen I DO lockdown on day 17 with the Sulmtalers and they have always hatched on day 20 for me. I had chicks zipping last night on day 19 1/2 LOL. They should all be out running around like crazy this morning.
