Hello everyone. I live in NJ and just discovered that my little girls favorite chicken just passed away. It was a white sultan hen about a year old. I haven't had the strength to tell them yet in hope I can find a replacement. If anyone has one for sale that's similar please let me know asap. Thanks so much.

I am so sorry to hear about your chicken. Have you checked your local Craigslist in the 'farm and garden' section?

Hello, yes I did. Nobody seems to have one. I can get day old chicks but they'll obviously know it's not the same hen.

I don't think it's fair to the kid to replace their chicken and not tell them.

As a kid myself, I would be far more upset if I found out she was replaced and nobody told me she died.

My little brother's favorite chickens were killed by a skunk a while ago. My mom said I couldn't tell him. We told him a week later and he was more upset that we didn't tell him right away.

Please tell your kid and then ask him if he wants another.

Hello and thanks for the reply. I totally agree with you but my daughters are both 6 years old and have just started understanding death. Neither one handles it well. They really loved this hen and I honestly don't think they're ready for the reality of what happened. I feel that I owe it to them to at least try to get them another right away. If it doesn't work out or if they can tell the difference then so be it but for right now I feel it's best to make the attempt. Thanks for your concern and opinion though I do appreciate it.

Sultans are very rare and hard to find. Anyone with an adult Sultan hen for sale will likely charge you an arm and a leg for her! Your best bet is probably to find someone with chicks and tell your girls that Mama died, but you have some of her babies/nieces/nephews she wants them to raise and love. Fuzzy babies go a long way towards healing little girls' broken hearts!
Good Luck!
