I picked up a pair of gorgeous baby sultans at chickenstock yesterday. I knew nothing about the breed. I looked them up and learned a little bit. sounds like they are mostly ornamental, lay about 1 egg a week, don't go broody very often.

Anyone have these? Are they docile/friendly? I live in maine and I worry about them being cold hardy. one site said they don't do well in cold (I usually always check that before buying, but this time I didn't)

My experience with them has not been good. They are very friendly and easy going. Cold seems to be a problem they die even with a heat lamp. Maybe it was just the birds I had- I do not know.

I have five 8 week old Sultans.
They are very nice looking.
They are calm and easy going.
I had 9 roos of dif. breeds in with them, the one Sultan roo
was getting picked on a lot. I have given 7 of them away.
The flock ( 24 bantams )All seem to be more calm now.
From what I read they don't take to the cold very well.
That is not a problem here in Florida.

Good luck with them;

Where are the pictures? Shouldn't there be some kinda rule here that every post requires a photo?????

I was given a mature sultan hen that I introduced all at one time to my sultan flock at 4 months old to the new sultan pen. She lays eggs every other day not once a week. Now that he heat is up in the 90's during the day she has stopped laying. I think they lay in the spring through early summer. They are nice birds and don't eat that much! Enjoy!

ok, what i know, from my experience only, my 2 hens give me an egg a day.
i have had these for 2 winters without loosing any, knock on wood. they are in an indoor outdoor run with the door (cat door size) open all winter long. very calm birds. well, the hens anyway. here is one of mine

Mine are nice and friendly. I have 2 bantum roos that were buds, and they thought they were really tough guys when together. I split them up and now they get along with everyone. My standards are nice and inquisitive. And anyone in Fl giving away sultans - Think of me!

That sounds good, I have also read that they don't lay well, but every other day, is not bad at all! I can see them not wanting to lay with the heat! Who would want to?
Thanks for your input! I think they are a fine looking bird! They sure are a calm breed.
I think we need a Sultan thread with many pictures, what do you think?

I have 8 hens and 2 Roos that are 4 month old. They are great birds! Calm and friendly, I live in NC and plan on adding heat to the run for winter..

I could not show a pic of my poor sultan hen (she was a rescue) New feathers growing back now and saved from a pecking yard of un-happy chickens. She is still quite ugly at this time. Good food and lots of room to move around, she will be pretty soon.
