Sultan???

I don't know about those, since they are not true Sultans. They are crossbred at some point to introduce the solid black coloration, so it would depend very much on the other breed used. There is one seller on Ebay who claims to produce blue and black Sultans 'one feather at a time' from breeding whites with odd colored feathers. That doesn't say much for the quality of his original stock if this is the case, and by the looks of them they are either mixed breed or such poor examples that they don't bear much resemblance to a Sultan.

I don't know if the temperament issue is related to Sultans in general (ie. even in Turkey), or specifically hatchery stock. Because they are rare the gene pool is fairly small in the US, and it may be the result of inbreeding.

My sultan hen is very flightly & nervous. She's a banty. I didn't work with her much, though....and no eggs as of yet.

Had to share... I've always had a soft spot for Sultans! I've had a bunch over the years, last year I found sultan chicks at the feed store so I bought them and have been breeding to improve type. My young birds are looking good and I just bought some chicks from Urch/Turnland that I'm hoping will make the next generation even better.

What I can say for my birds is that they are all mellow. The hens are great layers (mostly an egg a day since they started laying at 6 months) and the roosters are very not aggressive and good to the hens. I've also had really high hatch rates.

Yours are nice & an egg a day!!!!

...and you got them from the feed store??? or are the ones pictured from your own breeding..I am looking to get some next year, and would like to go with a breeder who knows theirs will lay well as hacheries say they lay only one egg a week! but breeders are saying 4-7 a week :) do you sell haching eggs?
