Sumac for chickens?

This year's sumac (not the poison variety) is ripe and abundant. I have made tea out of it before. I know the chickens will eat it, but I do not know if feeding them sumac is a good idea. Does anyone know if harvesting sumac would be good for the chickens and help save on feed cost?

If chickens have free choice in what to eat, they will not eat things that are bad for them.

I doubt that there is anything special about sumac that would reduce your feed requirement by much. Now, if you were growing and feeding alfalfa, that might matter.

Chickens are like most animals, they need a proper diet. There is no magic bullet. Mine forage all day, but still manage to eat plenty of commercial feed.
