Sumatra Thread!

No I didnt meet him but the person that sold me the birds knows him well. Mine are from his bloodlines I was told. I was able to take some pic of them today but cant post with the computer Im on. hopefully I can later with my own computer. I thought they would be a bit bigger though....they have very dark heads with yellow bottom feet, small combs, no wattles and a VERY bright green sheen. When do the spurs begin to develop because these birds must be at least 7-8 months old and I dont see much development on the legs:(

Has anyone been successful in making them somewhat friendly and enjoy being handled?
in mine I have noticed that multi spurred birds grow slower than a single spurred bird in the spur department.

Quote: I really have zero insight to this one myself, but I was super happy yesterday when I was trimming beaks & toenails & taking the pics, that my #1 choice cockerel fell asleep in my arms!

Made me extra glad that he's my number 1 choice for his physical attributes as well!

At our local fair/APA show, we took a few bantams and some LF. The one LF black hen got reserve AOSB behind an ameraucana, the duns did good but not a recognized variety. Our trio of bantams did well, the judge didn't like the cockerel because he is young and his spurs arent in yet but the bantam pullet got reserve bantam.

The first pic is what I end up getting when I try to take pics of sumatras in a small cage, followed by the cockerel somewhat calm, and the pullet. They were cold and tired this morning but figured I'd try to snap some pics with my phone before we head home tonight

Here are mine. I really do like the Sumatras. I just got them because that is what the feed store had in stock. I knew nothing about them at the time, but love them now.

They were a straight run when I got them and I'm still not sure what I got. I one in the middle I think is a Rooster because of the tail feathers, but there is no spur growth yet. They are 18 weeks. The other two I thought were hens but I picked one of the up the other day and it is getting spurs. I could feel the bumps on the legs, and it have more of a comb then either of the other ones, but it does not have the long feathers. None of them are crowing. I guess I will just have to wait and see. I really do hope at least one of them is a Rooster. I want to be able to breed them.

That's very true. My better birds always tend to take 2 years to feather out to their fullest potential also, and have noticed mine tend to add a spur each year. My primary blue breeder started with 3. You can see him on Feathersite as a yearling, it's amazing to see the difference in him at 3 now, doesnt even look like the same bird, but at 2 he added a small spur on top, then this year I noticed just this weekend while triming and deworming them, he has added a fifth on the bottom. also looks to be getting an even better tail this year too. Once he gets feathered back out I 'll take some up dated pics of him to show all this.
