Sumatra Thread!

That's very true. My better birds always tend to take 2 years to feather out to their fullest potential also, and have noticed mine tend to add a spur each year. My primary blue breeder started with 3. You can see him on Feathersite as a yearling, it's amazing to see the difference in him at 3 now, doesnt even look like the same bird, but at 2 he added a small spur on top, then this year I noticed just this weekend while triming and deworming them, he has added a fifth on the bottom. also looks to be getting an even better tail this year too. Once he gets feathered back out I 'll take some up dated pics of him to show all this.
adds spurs each year?? My first was a single spurred roo, but the black that I have now as a year old has 4 or 5 spur nubs starting and the dun has just as many if not one more. How many years do they get spurs? or is it a case of when the spur nubs will grow out, because I notice the the black roos middle two are growing but not really the rest. And I have not caught the dun in a while to get a good look at his spurs.

Not sure if all of them do it or not, just something I have been noticing on mine over the past couple years.
Last year I didnt even notice a nub on the bottom, just the primary spur in the middle then the 2 medium spurs on each side of it, and a nub forming on top. This year the nub is another full on spur and it has a good 1/4 " nub on bottom of everything starting that wasnt there last fall. Noticing similar traits in several of the other birds too, varying from 1-3 years old. on my birds that start with 4-6 spurs, I havent noticed them add any yet, but all those are just at a year old now, so will keep an eye on them, they cant spare much more room I dont think, being bantams, they about have a leg full already. But overall, yes the best birds seem to come in slow both on spur growth and feathering. Uusually you can see the row of nubs though by 6 months with ease, even though they arent much more than a rounded scale on the leg then.

I have made a habit of very closely examining my Sumatra chicks at hatch and I can determine those that will have multiple spurs at hatch. Even the young pullers you can see either one single spur or the row of spurs. Look closely, it's there
