My Sumatra's positively WILL NOT TOLLERATE confinement. I can't pen them, cage them, or keep them contained at all! That's my adult birds. They freerange on about 3 acres of my 30 acres. I do have young birds I incubated, and they are penned. Probably until they escape. Then, I'll never catch them again.
So my sumatra's act just like advertised in that respect. However Sumatra's are advertised as poor egg layers, and mine are GREAT egg layers. The hens have an 8 week average of 5 eggs each per week.
Now what I do wonder is.... are the confined birds and yours from incubated eggs or broody's? ALL of my adult birds are from broody's and I have 3 broody hens now. So I'll have more adult birds from broody's. I REALLY think that makes the difference. Human interference with nature...tends to kill natural instincts.
