Cyn, I didn't really think I was either. I got these Sumatra eggs on a whim here on one of the swap threads. I had a broody Blue Wheaten Ameraucana but I didn't have any eggs to put under her because all of my pure eggs were being given to friends, etc. I could have put some Delaweggers under her but I was itching for something else.

So, I found the Sumatras and jumped on them.

I'm not sure what I'll do with these babies. I've heard Sumatras make excellent mothers, so I may keep a few that will hopefully brood chicks for me. A friend of mine down in Santa Cruz though I think wants to raise some of these birds, we might end up sharing a small flock.

I thought Platinum was the result of 1 copy of the Blue gene and 1 copy of the Dun gene "mixing" to create the color, like a double dilution.

It's also my understanding that Khaki is Dun's version of Splash. With 1 copy of the Dun gene Black is diluted to Dun, with 2 copies it is then diluted to Khaki. Like 1 copy of the Blue gene dilutes Black to Blue and 2 copies dilutes it to Splash.

I hope my genetic jargon wasn't too confusing, I dunno how well I came across.

Also, these are just my internet research educated guesses, I could be completely wrong.

That is correct Jeremy

and no platinum and khaki, though look similar are not the same color.
Yes khaki is 2 copies of dun
platinum is 1 copy dun 1 copy splash

I Dunno Jeremy, I heard there were some biohazard issues mixing the primitive (Sumatra) birds with the highly bred (English Orpington).

You better just bring that little Platinum guy down to Santa Cruz. No need to take unnecessary risks you know?

Luke you're right, my Orpingtons are of the most esteemed breeding, they're practically Royalty.

That thought did cross my mind though... an Orp X Sumatra, that would be an interesting bird. I dunno if a small Sumatra hen could handle Neville- he keeps getting bigger and bigger every day. Maybe if we could hatch some of Bridget's Sumatra, ALL of her birds are gigantic. I wonder how much feed she goes through in a month???

So far 2 babies are tucked away under momma tonight, I hope to wake up and find at least one more with her tomorrow.
