Sumatra Thread!

The photo of the cockerel was taken in my garage. Fluorescent light was the only light used lol
Nice to know, thanks for the bit of information. Unfortunately I don't have any fluorescent lights, guess I'll stick to the good old sunlight

I'm trying to get some Pekings instead of an incubator. The hens are easier than an incubator I think. The hens take care of the chicks and it's cheaper than a incubator and a lamp. I have chicks hatching tomorrow, and I had chicks hatch on the 12th, but they hatched at a Friends when I was visiting England and I haven't seen them yet.

But yeah I think if you do some research on different breeds, you can find out which ones are good mothers and get the breed that you like best.
Raph I know that you call them pekins but if you see any chickens listed as cochins, get them as they are the same breed of chicken. I don't know why they are called cochins in the USA but pekins overseas

. Good luck with your hatch tomorrow.

Thanks.

A Peking is a true bantam, it looks like a Cochin but trust me they aren't the same.

I need to make a run for the chicks and hen to day, so ill buy wood and crack on with building. I actually find it quite fun building.

Hmm... I know cochins come in bantam and large fowl here and had been told by several people over in Europe that pekins and cochins were the same.

Are trip in England was great, and the wedding went well. We were up till 3:30am on the day of the wedding. I also set some carlisle oeg in my dads incubator. I got them from my grandpa. my dads dog Jade had puppies. My grandpas oeg had chicks but the hen killed them, i dont know why. And we saw lots of our family at the wedding so it was a nice trip back.

And i havent seen the chicks yet, i've only been told it was a poor hatch, but no numbers. But the Irish do like to mess, so hopefully he is joking about the chicks.

Just did a google search and well it said there is a difference, the head is lower than the tail, and there is no large fowl counter part to a pekin. I am mad that all the pictures that showed up have the heads higher than the tails though

.

Hope your friend is joking. Glad you had a good trip. Some hens are great sitters, but mad mothers. A friend has a few hens like this, she lets them sit and hatch the eggs and than removes the chicks from them after they hatch out.

My bantam Sumatra was such a good mother. i found it funny how she wouldn't peck me if i held a chick, but if a stranger picked up a chick she would be brutal. I love the sumatras as a breed they are one of a kind.

They are from a friend of mine, Katrina Csonka, she got her birds from Tom Kernan, Tim Durgan and Barbara Bullock. They are only 6 months old right now. I've seen photos of yours, where did you get yours? They are lovely.

I didn't know if you got the ones from Jeanine in Canby, OR since she got hers from us last year. I am pretty sure all of our bantams trace back to Myron Berger who bred them for ages.

Hi! Not sure if I posted here yet or not... I'm trying to get a flock started with sumatras.. right now they are free ranging with my other birds so I'm getting mixed chicks. Once I get them in their runs I'll concentrate on improving my stock. I have been surprised at the willingness for broodiness. The hen below has had two separate hatchings this summer already. And I have another hen currently on eggs (slipped in a few turkey eggs under her too as she was sitting on only one egg).

Batch #1

Batch #2
She's been a great mom though we lost two of the little yellow ones.

I saw comments about red in sumatras. .. I had this fellow that came with my others.. but I culled out of my flock. I also have a hen with some red in her and as soon as she's done brooding her eggs she will be culled as well. I don't have any picts of my current roo... he is a sweet bird, allows me to handle him.. but his tail leaves a lot to be desired, he's only 1 yr old so I hope he looks better next year.
