Sumatra Thread!

LL

Pretty rooster. Your other 1yr old rooster should look better next year. Normally I have a few broody sumatras, but this year I didn't have any of the sumatras go broody. I don't know if it was due to the very wet weather we have been having or not, but my silkies made up for them

They are from a friend of mine, Katrina Csonka, she got her birds from Tom Kernan, Tim Durgan and Barbara Bullock. They are only 6 months old right now. I've seen photos of yours, where did you get yours? They are lovely.
Pick her brain as much as you can, she's probably forgotten more about Sumatras and Sumatra breeding than most have ever known. Was thrilled when I heard she was getting back into it.

I agree with consensus of thread. Really like the male you posted, he should be really stunning when fully mature.

Hi guys, how are you?
I made a run yesterday for chicks. and so far 2 have hatched and there's more on the way. And from the hatch on the 13th guess how many hatched.(out of 8).
Do you people know how to sex day old chicks?

I'm a lurker here because I admire these beautiful birds. I would like to know how long you can hold cockerels before they begin fighting among themselves and/or the "head roo" decides they should leave and fights them? Can the cockerels be grown out enough for butchering before this (or these) event(s) occurs? Or must they be separated by pens in order to grow them out to proper weight? Thanks.

To be honest, we normally have more issues with wyandottes and easter egger cockerels fighting than the sumatras. Out of all the cockerels we have this year, the sumatras seem the best behaved. I'm sure you could try to grow them for butcher, they don't have much meat though

x2 I don't have much problems with the sumatra roosters being together.

Without vent sexing, I'm not sure you can sex a day old sumatra (atleast I can't sex them as day olds). I hope all 8 hatched for you, how many did hatch?

On the first hatch only 1 out of 8.
But so far on the second hatch 3 have hatched, one died tho. But i can here at least 2 more trying to get out.
