Good example is us to an extent and a few other breeders I know. With some birds like the dun bantam project, I know Aubrey will continue to improve them so he is the only person to get any birds this year. A good leghorn breeder on the coast refuses to sell to anyone within the region because he doesn't want competition or people breeding his line and ruining it, then pawning off birds that shoukd be culled as coming from his line
Kinda like almost every marans under the sun is from Bev Davis or Jean Wade. I have always had the view that if the breeder didn't breed that exact bird, you can't sell it as their bird. All you can say is that the parent stock is from "so and so" breeder. That's why none of the few extra birds that I sell go with any kind of name except for what breed it is. I don't think its so much the fact that some of these breeders don't want competition, they just don't want beat by their bird that was sold (and in my opinion should have gone to a breeding pen only) and the new owner takes all the credit for the years of hard work done by the breeder. I can also understand not wanting their line that they have worked so hard on, to be ruined. Which you can see this example in the marans, most don't even meet the standards to be called a marans, but the birds or their eggs are sold off as top of the line stock.

But this is all just all how I feel about it. Unfortunately, I will also have to start looking for a few breeders (who will help improve) to go with some of my projects, which for 2 of them shouldn't be as hard as the 3rd one. But I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I think it is a good idea to get your lines out there. If you get a flash flood, or a major natural disaster and all your birds die, them you can go back to the person who has some of your best lines and get your line back. Let me tell you a story. A good chicken breeder friend of mine. had a HUGE Flash flood happen at his house. He lost almost every single birds on his place. The sad thing is he has worked so hard on his lines. He spend 30 years breeding them. Thank goodness he had someone who had his lines because he had nothing after that flood.

Only to a certain point can you get your lines back. Even if said other person has only your birds, they will breed them differently than you would have. And that is only if the person even still has them.

At least it is better than nothing at all. That is why you spread it around so you have more than one source.
Yes it is better than nothing, didn't say it wasn't. But I can understand not wanting everyone to have your lines. Being selective in who they go to can help strengthen the lines or keep them about the same if you ever need to dip into that set of birds. And being selective can also stop the "everyone has this line" (like the marans) and in reality the birds are no longer even close to what the breeder attached to the birds will put out themselves. Kind of a double edge sword that way.

He's saying what you claim is literally impossible. 7 birds cannot scientifically produce 12 eggs in a single day.

and certainly not every day. If you find 12 eggs in a pen of 7 birds it's because you didn't gather the eggs yesterday. Facts are facts & the fact is it takes a bit over 23 hours for a chicken to form an egg. As to the double yolker issue a double yolk egg isn't 2 eggs it's one egg with 2 yolks.

In a few years when I am hatching better quality birds consistently I fully intend to close band each bird. If I cull a bird I can reuse the band and if I keep or sell that bird it will be labelled as my bird. If your bird doesn't have my band it's not my bird! We can all go to an art store and buy the same paints, but we each put them together differently. Just because my paints are from Winsor & Newton mixed with Stevenson doesn't guarantee my paintings will be prettier. In the end it is your talent as a breeder that defines your birds, and your character as a person that will define your reputation.

Just Back from my Show today and i Won Champion JR Largefowl Reserve Super Grand Champion of the Junior show and Champion JR AOSB with my Black Hen

Awesome! Keep up the good work!

We didn't do well at all, but my brother has concluded he is going to sell his brahma cockerel. There were 7 sussex in our class and one of my two sussex hens came third. So we didn't do as well as I thought we would. I did get to be a steward for a judge and i learned a bit.

Zach congratulations on you success.
Hold your chin up Ralph. I show my horse all the time and when I don't win or place and people ask how, I did I say I had a great time! Getting there and doing it makes you a champion, most people don't have the guts or won't put in the effort to arrive and you beat everyone of them!
Also my newest slogan is: When I don't win, I learn.

Quote: I understand it too. But it is a smart idea in general especially when you live in places where they have hurricanes, tornadoes, huge flash floods. The scary thing is that the guy I was taking about he lives in Gila Cliff NM and that is not far away at all from us. It Just shows you that anything can happen. Did you guys hear about what happend in Boulder Colorado?
