Sumatra Thread!

Thanks, all i need is to look around in spring time for new stock and bloodlines. At Christmas i'm going to ask my parents for money and wood so i can make coops, then i'm going to sell some birds and make some money. I need to be able to fund my self for the coops i make, then i can get more birds and do some better breeding. The breeds i'm going to focus on are Light sussex, black and blue sumatras, black pekins and Carlisle Old english Game.

In a few years when I am hatching better quality birds consistently I fully intend to close band each bird. If I cull a bird I can reuse the band and if I keep or sell that bird it will be labelled as my bird. If your bird doesn't have my band it's not my bird! We can all go to an art store and buy the same paints, but we each put them together differently. Just because my paints are from Winsor & Newton mixed with Stevenson doesn't guarantee my paintings will be prettier. In the end it is your talent as a breeder that defines your birds, and your character as a person that will define your reputation.
Very true words on this point. Nice to see you come back. How are your birds doing?

Thanks Ramirez! My birds are doing great, adults are in full moult right now but I'm going through the pullets choosing my breeders for next year. I have a lot of culling ahead of me... How are things going for you?

I'm in the same spot as you. Waiting for a few to finish regrowing feathers, mostly my roosters. My dun rooster got in a fight with the silkie roosters through the fence, and managed to break all 6 of his spurs off, so waiting to see how they come in along with the nubs of the others he's got (he has spots for 7 on each leg and only just turned 2 years old, so it'll be interesting to watch). I still have to cull my youngsters. I know which ones are being culled, just have to get it done. Had a very wet spring and summer and I think this played a role in the hatching rates, so I still have some that are only a couple months old that I will have to go through come spring.

Do you mind telling me what a closed band is? Is it the type used for NPIP? I've seen a few different types of leg bands and all could be removed, just might not be usable after it was removed.

Yes it is better than nothing, didn't say it wasn't. But I can understand not wanting everyone to have your lines. Being selective in who they go to can help strengthen the lines or keep them about the same if you ever need to dip into that set of birds. And being selective can also stop the "everyone has this line" (like the marans) and in reality the birds are no longer even close to what the breeder attached to the birds will put out themselves. Kind of a double edge sword that way.
agree with everything you and FMP have said on the topic.

Now I wanna see pictures...if you don't mind

Thanks! The others should be good to go next week.

I'll try to get some pics of the dun/platinum bantams we kept for our breeders. I believe we kept a trio of duns, 3 platinum pullets, and a handful of blacks. Lots of good looking LF too. Last week I took about 20 sumatra cockerels to the traders place and we still have lots left

Was that your Dun Sumatra at the PNPA show? I had the Blue pullet there. I would love to see a picture of the platinum pullets!
