Sumatra Thread!

Hello in CT and I just moved and have to sell 2 of my 3 roosters ASAP. Show quality 10$EA just to make sure they go to a good home and not for food. I'd hate to see such good quality birds go on the table. PM me if interested. Thanks

Hey guys sorry This is kinda random. I don't know anything about sumatras but I have a question. How many heritage chicken breeds are there? I found a list of 23. But that seemed to short and too specific. Anyone know the actual amount? And which ones they are?

Hundreds, possibly thousands. There are a limited amount available in the United States however.

A heritage breed is any breed that can naturally breed and has been around for at least 50-75 years (some people disagree on the exact number of years). Two excellent books I often quote from on heritage breeds are

  • Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds
  • An Introduction to Heritage Breeds: Saving and Raising Rare-Breed Livestock and Poultry

Also see here for a list of endangered heritage breeds:

I have a mystery chick that I think might be a Sumatra. She/he has been pitch black since I got her at 1 week old - her feathers have a bluish sheen to them, and her comb is a flat black comb, along with her legs and feet.

Here are pics of her now, and the top one is of her when I brought her home at one week and now she is 7 weeks. Also - if you have any ideas on gender, that would be lovely. I have six chicks, and three are roosters so I'm really hoping she's a she. Her comb is almost non existant - but because I don't know the breed it's so hard to know if that means anything. Sorry I have none of her on her own, she is very flighty but she is my only all black chick so you can spot her in the pics below. (If you click on the pic you will see it bigger on the screen) You can't really see the sheen to her in these pics, but I promise it's there! :)

Most sumatra chicks are not solid black, but have some cream fluff also. Sumatras also have yellow feet bottoms. Your black chick almost looks to have a small crest possibly coming in. At this moment I'd guess a boy since it has a bigger pea comb, but I could be wrong. Good luck with your chicks.

Thought I'd share a couple pics of my favorite Sumatras
