Sumatra Thread!

Pics
NoZolbitty, mine are flighty but not really aggressive. We have one hen Luna who is pretty crazy at times but she is a special chicken. They are great free ranging birds, they might try to fight but not really super mean, I have had a Rhode Island red rooster that was 10x's meaner than any sumatra. They are more intelligent than the average chicken in my opinion and when you look into their eyes, you can tell there is something going on there, they seem to have more of a soul than an average bird and seem wise.

I sit now educated I thought Sumatras only came in black, By the way what kind of disposition do these birds have?

Most of mine don't want to be messed with but once you have them, they are fine. I got one hen that just ain't right. She likes to play in the water hose when I water them and she also will sit in front of me to be petted when I am in the pen. And I agree with FMP.

mine are pretty similar. Some aren't flighty at all. Some are a little flighty. Some outright flighty. A few of my roo's are quite friendly. none are mean. And yes, much more intelligent than the average chicken. I thought I was the only one who thought the look in their eyes showed a sign of something more than the average chicken. I have found that some of the penned roo's will get aggressive and attack me. Challenge them and that is over. Free range rooster , at least mine exibit none of this behavior. They are VERY vocal. Hens and roosters. I've never heard hens that made so much noise. Also they make noises that I've never heard other chickens make. and FLY, OMG can they fly. I've got one blue hen who when I open up the door for her in the morning, she flies out of her coop, and goes 50 to 60 yards to her destination by the duck coop. One the ground, they run, almost everywhere they go. Great birds. My personal favorite.

What can I look for to distinguish a Blue chick from a Dun chick?

wise I had some pics to show in down for you, but a blue is going to well basically be a slate blue down, a dun is going to be a dull smokey grey color down with no blue tint at all. On both you can have pale to mediun, to almost black versions. But the average dun will be a nice smokey grey down color
