Sumatra Thread!

Hi, my name is dixie. i am 16 years old. i have wanted phoenix chickens since i first saw them and over the weekend i ran into a pair of sumatras and instantly fell in love with them. but i have to come up with a cheep and easy coop design for them. Help??

I think there is a whole forum topic about this. Click the "Forum" at the top of the page, and then click "Raising Backyard Chickens." There is a section in there called "Coop & Run: Design, Construction, and Maintenance." I think you could get some good suggestions there

I've got 5 Sumatra babies in the brooder now. 1 Platinum, 1 Dun, 1 Blue and 2 that I'm not sure of... I think 1 more may be Dun and the other looks pretty dark, so I'm thinking Black. There are 3 more eggs in the bator, 1 with a pip. I've got another set of eggs under a broody set to hatch on the 5th. I'm loving these wee ones.

Just candled sumatra eggs, so far they are the most fertile. Out of the 4 dozen sumatra (bantam and largefowl) eggs, only 3 were bad compared to other breeds which had less fertile eggs. I also got another trio of LF black sumatras tonight that the lady got from us a couple years back. Well, they are offspring of the birds she got from us. She also had a bantam blue hen that is closer to LF in size but still a nice hen. I will work on trying to get a decent pic soon.

Beautiful birds! The golden with the funky comb; is that caused by crossing rose & single combed birds? I'm not knocking it, just curious as I've never seen a comb like that before.

here they are

first, here's some recent one of the bantam blues they just came out of molt are are still in heavy blood feather

now here's some I plan to outcross to next year to start the duckwing sumatras

this should start a good golden line

this bb red is partial sumatra already, note the dark skin, also hard to tell but is triple spurred, has 1 main spur and a nub on top and below it

Then this is a bb red x ginger red he is double spured, just has nubs right now but they are coming in nice, he should help make some nice ginger reds (shojo)

My computer has been hating me lately. If you were interested in bantam sumatras, send me a pm. We will start selling their eggs for a short time between our hatches. We have 2 black roosters in with 4 blue hens and 2 black hens. Before long we will also have some LF sumatra eggs, they will all be from one pen when we get it finished this weekend. That pen will have the dun cockerel, black cockerel, dun hen, and 4 black hens. I know Jeremy needs some of their eggs, lol.

We haven't put them together yet, each of the breeding groups is in their own pen for now. I have to put up new fencing around the main yard because the sexlink maker hens were flying over and laying in the barns so they are in the big pen that the sumatras were going to go in. Hopefully this weekend they will all go together. I am saving eggs this week from each of the pens and marking them as such. With luck we might have some eggs ready to ship out next week. You will be the first to know Jeremy. There are a couple more folks here on BYC then a couple on facebook. If anyone else is interested in sumatra eggs, send me a message so I can let you know when they're available.
